Why Clients Don’t Always Say What They Really Want

Client trust isn’t built in the result — it begins in the consultation. Discover how a more guided, intentional approach can transform your confidence and your client experience.

One of the most common challenges stylists face is trying to understand what a client truly wants.

Because often…
what is said,
and what is meant,
are not the same thing.

A client may bring in a photo.

  • Describe a length.

  • Or use familiar words like “soft long layers” or “just a tidy up.”

But underneath that, there is often something much less defined.

A feeling they are trying to achieve.

A version of themselves they are hoping to step into.

A past experience they are either trying to recreate… or avoid.

And without meaning to, they may communicate in a way that feels clear to them, but is open to interpretation for the stylist.

This is where many consultations begin to lose alignment.

Because if the stylist simply listens and proceeds, without guiding or exploring further, the service is built on an assumption rather than clarity.

And this is often where the disconnect happens.

Not because the stylist didn’t listen…

but because the conversation didn’t go deep enough.

A strong consultation is not about asking more questions for the sake of it.

It is about knowing which questions create clarity.

And having the confidence to guide the client through that process.

Helping them articulate what they mean.

Refining what they are asking for.

And gently redirecting when needed.

This is where the stylist moves from interpreting to truly understanding.

And when that happens,

the result feels aligned in a way that goes beyond the surface.

This is a key part of what I teach through

The Guided Consultation Method™.

A more thoughtful and structured way of approaching consultations, so that both stylist and client feel clear before anything begins.

If this resonates, you’re warmly invited to explore more.

If you’ve found yourself navigating these moments within your consultations, and feeling the weight of getting it right, you’re welcome to reach out to begin a conversation and explore whether this approach could offer a more grounded and aligned way forward.
